Destruction, 1915.jpg
Gouache on paper.
This was the first painting of the series and was featured on the cover of the Hamilton Spectator in 2014. One of two that I still have of these.

Surgery, 1917.jpg
I built this painting mainly from imagination and some basic reference. The surgeon in the back is busy with an amputation. This is the second one that I still have- framed.

Gas Attack, St. Julien, April 24, 1915.j
Gouache on paper.
The 48th highlanders of Canada were one of the first units to be gassed, 1915. Wetting, or peeing in a hankerchief and holding it over your mouth was the only protection they had.

Under Shellfire-1916.jpg
I believe this was based on the battle of Mont Sorrel in 1916. Note the Ross rifle which had, originally, a bayonet that couldn't puncture a wet compost bag.

The Souvenir.jpg
Regardless of wounds, the liberated pickelhaube is the star of this painting.

The Nightmare.jpg
I leave this one to the viewer to translate.

The Jolly Old Mud.jpg
Gouache on paper.
I based this on a contemporary photo as I did not have a field gun in my back yard. Changed it around and gave it some cool atmosphere.

Stretcher Bearers .jpg

I had this up on social media some years back, but somebody took me to task about the Red Cross armbands. I was informed that they should have been the S.B. of stretcher bearers should have been on the armbands instead. Since then I have seen both, so....

Ted Conover.jpg
My late father-in-law pictured here in the 1960's as Colonel of The Lorne Scots, Brampton, Ontario. Ted was a real character for sure. He, like many of the other young fellows kicking their heels in England, volunteered for the First Special Service Force. This was a Canada/U.S. group who fought under American direction, I believe. Ted stepped on a wooden land mine during a night raid at Anzio that blew off his heel. The rest of his crew were hurt much worse, and he was the only one not to lose a leg! He hit the mine while carrying a wounded comrade to safety- they both went up.
He, like the rest of the canadians in the group were awarded the Bronze Star on a few years ago!

RCR'S AT DIEPPE.jpg
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this was the Royal Canadian Regiment pinned against a seawall during the disasterous Dieppe Raid, August 1942.

Newfoundland Regiment July 1, 1916.jpg
Watercolour and gouache on paper. The Newfoundland Regiment was part of the british Army at the time (not yet part of Canada). Ordered over the top during the Somme battle and decimated.

Just a study with no story. Sorry.

Incident at HQ.jpg
I wanted an excuse to paint a motorcycle and how this new-fangled machine must have pissed of some people at HQ.

The Hospital Tent.jpg
I can't imagine the scenes carnage that took place in the tents. The mental anguish the medical staff must have endured for the rest of their lives is impossible to imagine.

German Prisoners.jpg
No real reason for this one....just an excuse to paint something.

The Fusilier Mont Royal at Dieppe, 1942
This is a re-do of a painting done for the CBC special in 1978. I hope I've got the regiment correct here- correct me if I'm wrong. These poor buggers were sent in after the massacre had begun and were basically slaughtered on the beach.

This was the initial drawing before I started slinging paint on it. Had the presence of mind to take a shot of it in case I screwed it up.

I tried to capture various qualities; greed, insensitivity, futility, loss, and sadness in this painting.
